Penang, Malaysia – Maxis has announced a major fibre network expansion in Penang, aiming to connect more than 100,000 homes across the state by 2027. This large-scale rollout will cover all districts in Penang, with a strong focus on high-demand urban areas such as Jelutong, Georgetown, Batu Maung, Bayan Lepas and Bayan Baru, as well as key locations in Mainland Penang.
Supporting Penang’s Digital Vision
The expansion aligns closely with the Penang2030 vision — a state initiative to build a smart, green, and inclusive digital economy. The project is made possible through the Penang State Government’s Last Mile Connectivity Guidelines, which streamline pole-sharing procedures and accelerate fibre deployment for telecommunications providers.
During the official launch event, Maxis extended its appreciation to the Penang State Government for its foresight in promoting digital inclusivity and fair industry competition.
YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, Chief Minister of Penang, stated:
“The Penang State Government welcomes Maxis’ fibre expansion initiative, which aligns with our Penang2030 vision. High-quality internet connectivity is essential for education, talent development and economic growth. It will strengthen Penang’s position as a regional hub for technology and innovation while ensuring every Penangite can thrive in the future economy.”
Expanding Malaysia’s Fibre Footprint
Currently, Maxis’ fibre network spans more than 23,000 kilometres across Malaysia, with the capacity to serve over 500,000 homes nationwide. Its proprietary infrastructure is complemented by collaborations with other network providers, extending coverage to even more communities.
Moving forward, Maxis plans to further expand its own-built fibre network and enhance home connectivity solutions to meet Malaysians’ growing demand for reliable, high-speed internet. The expansion not only benefits residents but also empowers businesses in Penang to drive digitalisation, innovation and long-term growth.
